This month sees my artwork crossing international boundries and featuring on the French edition of The Science of Discworld II, ' LE GLOBE', published by L’Atalante. I always find it interesting to see how different designers treat the artwork.
I have also been interviewed on the hatchetjob videogame podcast (the home of intelligent and irreverent gaming discussion) talking about the old days when I did artwork for computer game packaging and magazine covers. Back then the work was done with traditional materials (old fashioned things like paint brushes and pencils) and this trip down memory lane spurred me to dig out a couple of images from those days… (It also made me feel a bit of a dinosaur.) Here is an old Games Master cover, and a Star Wars image painted for Total Nintendo back in the early 90’s.
The model makers Micro Figs have been busy in Poland creating the next set of Discworld minis; the latest creations are Cassanunda, Otto Chriek, Mustrum Ridcully and Two Flower. Its fun to see my designs rendered in 3D so faithfully by their studios, and one of these days when I have time, I intend to paint my own set. As I kid I used to spend hours painting tiny WWII soldiers (there was no Games Workshop in those days). I never dreamed that one day there would be little models of my own drawings.
This month also sees the release of a logo and poster design commissioned by a Hawaii-based philanthropist who works to address environmental and humanitarian issues. This was an unusual commission for me, and I enjoyed working on such a worthwhile cause.
I have decided to end this update with a quote I stumbled across recently, which I will bear in mind the next time I embark on a sculpting project: Wishing you a merry month of May,
